compressed air-driven vehicles By Thomas Medd A company has spent ten years developing vehicles driven by compressed air. Several designs are either in production or proposed, from small cars for 1 or 2 passengers to trains of passenger-carrying vehicles for public transportation, to freight vans both for road use and carrying goods around sites such as airports. With zero emissions they are ideal for cities as they could eliminate pollution caused by oil burning engines. Dual fuel versions enable longer and faster journeys to be made as relying solely on the compressed air would probably limit top speeds to 45 mph, but that would be adequate in most cities where average speeds are nowhere near 45 mph anyway. Using tanks designed for flammable materials such as methane means there is no danger of explosive release of gas in the case of impact, in any case air is not as dangerous as methane even under pressure. These tanks are made to split lengthways so a sharp short sound is the only thing to be produced even if they did rupture. Recharging the air tanks usually takes about 90 seconds and costs around €1. This would allow a car to travel around 200 Kms (125 miles). Well worth watching.
